    Austin Industrial, Inc. is a leading General Contractor that provides construction, maintenance, turnaround, specialty, and plant services within the oil, gas, chemical, power, and manufacturing industries.  We are currently seeking an experienced Vice President of Specialty. The VPS provides the overall leadership, coordination, business unit accountability and the direction necessary for the execution of specialty services at customer sites. This individual will have a highly visible role within the Austin organization and be given the opportunity to build upon, and expand, Austin’s current service offering while becoming an integral part of the senior management team. In addition to excellent leadership skills, the VPS must have the ability to maintain a strong working relationship with Austin’s employee-owners, customers, subcontractors, vendors, industry leaders, etc. This role reports to the Senior Vice President of Maintenance & Specialty Operations and direct reports include: 

    • Specialty Operations Managers
    • Site Specialty Managers
    • Salaried Specialty Supervision and Leaders

    This position is based in our La Porte, TX corporate office.


    Specific responsibilities of the VPS include:

    • Manage the specialty business unit for continuous growth and profitability.
    • Maintain profit/loss accountability for each specialty site – including job cost controls and take proactive measures to meet or beat annual revenue and margin targets. Maintain job cost reporting in accordance with company policy.
    • Maintain prudent fiscal management to minimize operating costs.
    • Manage work through your direct reports and oversee personnel to ensure the team achieves outstanding results.
    • Manage business with little oversight and structure, being able to create structure for the business unit through developing outline for procedures and framework for work processes ensuring their implementation to achieve a high performance team.
    • Set an example by his/her work ethic and professional conduct and hold the team members accountable for superior performance.
    • Communicate the Company mission, vision, values, goals, and policies and ensure the team supports them.
    • Provide leadership and direction in establishing a world class safety culture.
    • Develop strong relationships with Austin employee-owners, customers, subcontractors, engineers, consultants, industry leaders, etc.
    • Take an active and important role in business development for locating and pursuing new work. Lead such discussions and pursuit teams and/or serve as a member of the Austin presentation team.
    • Take an active role in developing innovative bids and proposals that will provide value-added and cost savings aspects to the prospective customer. 
    • Assume a leadership role in the career planning and development of assigned personnel, including site assignments, merit increases, promotions, and decisions to promote hourly staff to salary, etc. Attempt to balance the needs of the individual with the needs of the company.


    Education and experience:

    • Fifteen plus (15+) years of industry experience with at least five (5) of those years in a position of senior responsibility in a similar position.
    • Bachelor’s degree preferred − Mechanical Engineering or Construction Management degree preferred; certification as a Professional Engineer or an advanced degree is an asset.
    • Proven successful track record executing specialty projects.
    • Experience with petrochemical, refinery or power plant projects is strongly preferred.
    • Capacity to think both strategically and tactically, coupled with the ability to focus on day-to-day issues. Proven experience in building partnerships.
    • Business acumen developed through supplemental education and/or experience.
    • Must be creative with bold concepts, yet realistic from a cost and schedule perspective.
    • Must be comfortable working hands-on with highly engaged organizational environment and demonstrate a high degree of flexibility with a strong bias for action.
    • Must be a “team player”, however, must also be comfortable in confronting issues and be willing to question the “status quo” (as appropriate) with the intention of bringing people together to achieve a win/win outcome.
    • Must be able to achieve consensus.
    • Ability to develop innovative proposal and bids that will provide value added and cost savings aspects to the projects.
    • Experience in the following areas:          

    -  Previous experience managing the actual specialty work is preferred.

    -  Business planning (developed annually and reviewed quarterly for progress).    

    -  Revenues and cost expense forecasting and management.

    -  Operational planning and management.

    • Experience in selecting, motivating and developing people. Provide consistent coaching and counseling for overall performance and career development of all employees.
    • Possess ‘hands-on’ experience leading a multi-functional business team that includes a well-defined personal background in:  

          −    Business Development                       −    Preparing Bids & Proposals

          −    Financial Controls                              −    Risk Management

          −    Safety                                                  −   Supply Chain and Logistics

          −    Project Controls                                  −   Quality Control

          −    Construction Equipment                     −   Project Turnover

          −    Subcontractor Performance                −   Contract Management
